Day 5: Anuradhapura

1. Sri Maha Bodhi (Sacred Bo Tree)

The sacred fig tree is believed to be a sapling from the original Bodhi Tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. It is over 2,300 years old and is considered the oldest documented tree in the world.

2. Ruwanwelisaya Stupa

Built by King Dutugemunu in 140 BCE, this massive white stupa is one of the most venerated monuments in Sri Lanka. It stands as a symbol of Buddhist heritage and pride.

4.Thuparamaya Dagoba

The oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, Thuparamaya was built during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa to house the right collarbone relic of Lord Buddha.

5. Abhayagiriya Monastery Complex

One of the largest monastic complexes in Sri Lanka, built during the reign of King Valagamba in the 1st century BCE. It was a center for Buddhist learning and a spiritual hub.

6. Jetavanaramaya Stupa

Once the largest brick structure in the world, this stupa was built by King Mahasena (3rd century CE) and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

7. Mihintale

  • Overview: Located near Anuradhapura, Mihintale is the site where Buddhism was first introduced to Sri Lanka by Arahat Mahinda. It’s often called the “Cradle of Buddhism.”

8. Isurumuniya Vihara
